Well, the movie stays true to his character, as he's still a booby trapping vet with plot convenient PTSD. But instead of throwing him into a war conflict, it's just a revenge movie.
Take John Rambo, stick him into Taken by way of Sicario, and tack on the third act of Skyfall = Last Blood.
