The director is Takashi Miike, one of the most, if not the most, prolific directors working anywhere in the world. 1999's Audition is probably his most famous movie. Watched a few of his movies of that era. Ichi The Killer, Gozu, and if you want less violence with the weirdness try The Happiness Of The Katakuris. I've seen Audition. It was OK. Hardly a classic though. I've heard of the Katakuris. It's a musical, isn't it? Sounds quite interesting. Picking a genre for Miike's films, at least of the few I've seen, isn't too easy so I don't know that Katakuris is that much of a musical as it is comedy, drama, horror, etc. While I liked Audition a lot I don't think any of his movies can be considered a classic.
