Sometime in the forties when Cary Grant was asked who the best actor in Hollywood was, he said: "Mickey Rooney." And apparently he meant it.
Maybe Grant meant that Rooney was the best actor because he was so successful in playing genial young men while being anything but genial in reality.
That isn't how I understood it. My recollection is that it was a tribute to Rooney's varied multiple talents. As for Rooney's lack of geniality, I know little if anything about that.
