They've never known what to do with these characters after they're together; that's why we have the rinse and repeat format of constantly breaking up characters, only to put them back together ad nauseam.
I get the impression, based on the terms Kate Mansi has returned to the show the last couple of years, not on contract, but strictly recurring, and often on a short term basis, that she may not be interested in sticking around Days long term. I'm not entirely sure Billy's heart is in it nearly as much as it used to be. I've seen comments about how he seems to be kind of phony it in more than he used to, and I don't think they're entirely wrong in that observation; that they're giving him much to prove otherwise.
I was wondering when they were bringing Stefan back; it seems like it was ages ago word came out that he'd be back eventually - stupid production lag.... I wasn't watching last time he was on, so I'm only familiar with the character before the recast, but I always heard good things about him after the change was made.
I suspect he'll be the new Stefano host, perhaps permanently; which I don't think would be a bad thing. I was wondering if they were going to go that route for a while now, since obviously they weren't going to make it permanent with Steve; then they have Stevano plotting some contingency with Rolph - which they may have been meant to allude to the self-destruct feature, but I think that was a red herring - and now the Stefan actor is teasing the character's identity.
