He was one of those players who, when they were active, seemed a sure HOFer. Don Mattingly was another. Fred Lynn

I just looked up Mattingly, for a refresher (his best years were before I started following). He never struck out 50 times in a season, not even 45 I think, despite 3-4 years of nearly Lou Gehrig production. An MVP season and a runner up the next year.

Same with Murphy, who had a 4 year stretch from '82-'85 with 36, 36, 36 and 37 HR, and 162 games played each of those seasons. 2 MVPs and two more top 10. 5 straight GG's too. Another great year in '87, then he just fell off a cliff.
