I believe there is about half an hour footage that got lost but still they were able to make a coherent story. Yes, apparently a good deal of footage was cut before the film was released due to it being too disturbing. One of the cut scenes (no pun intended) featured Hercules (the strongman) singing with falsetto voice at the end of the movie implying that he had been castrated by the freaks. In the cut version, we never do learn of his fate, only that he was attacked and presumably killed by the avenging freaks. But, no, apparently, they spared his life but punished him by taking away his manhood. Great I didn't know that one. I can see why that was cut out. It would be too disturbing even for most people by today's standards.
