The look on Richie's face at that moment can be interpreted in many ways but I really like the meaning you've given to it. He does go back to his buddies (at least the ones that were still around) and tries to keep the spirit of The Wanderers alive. Who knows how long it can last, though, with the world changes that are looming. It's a good thought to ponder.
