What do you think about the practice of someone taking a 35mm film and having a telecine scan done of it, then releasing it as a bootleg online?
There are two notable examples of this.
One is the Unaltered Trilogy project--I read that for some of the re-creation of the films, they used 35mm SW movies that people owned and did scans to get better image quality.
Another is SONG OF THE SOUTH--someone with a 35mm print of the film (liked to know where they got it) from its last release (1980s) had it scanned to digital. The quality is reported to be superb (the only other available version was a Japanese laserdisc).
Do you consider this an act of piracy or film preservation (since in both cases, it seems unlikely the original films would be made available)?
