Have you seen Glory, Cry Freedom, The Hurricane, Flight, For Queen and Country or Roman J. Israel Esq.? I agree he does basically the same thing in most of his action movies, but I think he is excellent in all of his dramas. I haven't seen The Hurricane or Cry, Freedom (actually I think I saw the latter, or most of it, years ago). Yeah, I worded that badly, I just woke up lol... he's a good actor, sometimes very good, but for me there's a sameness about most of his performances, even his stronger ones. He does certain things very well but seldom stretches himself out of his comfort zone. I certainly understand why he's a huge star, though - he has presence like few other contemporary actors. I actually agree with that and don't have a problem with it. It is hard to fail when you stick to what you know you can do well and have the level of charisma and screen presence that he has to be extremely watchable even when you are given scripts like 2 Guns or Virtuosity. I mention Cry Freedom because it is one of the rare times he does an accent. He does a South African accent convincingly in that and a convincing English accent in For Queen and Country. He also puts the "smugness" aside for those movies. I don't see it as smug, but I get what you are talking about. Roman J. Israel is like no other performance he has ever given imo. He is relatively introverted and almost awkward in it. The movie doesn't say it outright, but I think his character is suppose to be high functioning Autistic.
