Nurse Ratched was one of the greatest characters and my #1 villain. Unlike Norman Bates, she wasn't bat shit crazy. Unlike Darth Vader, she wasn't willingly evil. And that's the greatness of the character. She truly thought she was helping the inmates. She truly thought her routines here helping her patients. We can all see she wasn't helping her patients, but she can't. In reality, Ratched should be pitied, not hated. The road to hell is paved with good intentions. I truly think she still believed she did nothing wrong, even at the end of the movie. My wife is an RN and she has known plenty of Nurse Ratched's in her day. What "the book" says, goes Louise Fletcher is, in my opinion, the biggest slam dunk in Oscar history. She nailed it, 100%. That little smile that was perpetually on her face There used to be major debates on the old board concerning whether Nurse R was "just doing her job" or whether she was a sadistic evil female dog. What she says to Billy about having to tell his mother about the "overnight activity " pretty well sums it up .... woof woof ! Nurse Ratched: Aren't you ashamed?
Billy: No, I'm not.
[Applause from friends]
Nurse Ratched: You know Billy, what worries me is how your mother is going to take this.
Billy: Um, um, well, y-y-y-you d-d-d-don't have to t-t-t-tell her, Miss Ratched.
Nurse Ratched: I don't have to tell her? Your mother and I are old friends. You know that.
Billy: P-p-p-please d-d-don't tell my m-m-m-mother.
followed by Nurse Ratched: The best thing we can do is go on with our daily routine.
