That's interesting that you used the word "shrill" to describe Cindy Williams' character. In her review of "American Graffiti", Pauline Kael cited the "shrill vibes" in Cindy Williams' performance.
But Laverne doesn't have a mean bone in her body. Shirley can be a bit critical/judgmental at times. Though they are both are funny.
