That's interesting that you used the word "shrill" to describe Cindy Williams' character. In her review of "American Graffiti", Pauline Kael cited the "shrill vibes" in Cindy Williams' performance. But Laverne doesn't have a mean bone in her body. Shirley can be a bit critical/judgmental at times. Though they are both are funny. When I thought of her character, her whining came to mind. Shrill seemed an appropriate label. I find Streisand shrill too. I like Shirley, I just prefer Laverne. Williams seems more forced in her approach to her humor and antics. Marshall was more of a natural and I wouldn't be surprised if Williams fed off Marshall for her shtick. Shrill Shirley
