I do think that Shaq was more impactful upon departure or whatever because he was more of a unique singularity in the league. Kobe was one of the best wingmen or whatever, but the modern game has dozens of great/very good guys in that role, hence the early playoff struggles without Shaq? I think Phil preferred to keep going with Shaq? For me though, Kobe is top 10 calibre, & top 5 Laker. I find the NBA's 10 is the simplest group to collect, it's ppl's orders which usually sway. I'd also say there are easily 20 guys in all who could be eligible. It's like a puzzle of greatness & the 10 best pieces & in what order of those 20 down to 10. 1. Michael Jordan 2. LeBron James 3. Bill Russell 4. Magic Johnson 5. Larry Bird 6. Wilt Chamberlain 7. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar 8. Tim Duncan 9. Kobe Bryant 10.Hakeem Olajuwon At the end of the day, top 10s or 20s are always somewhat interchangeable. I'm stunned Pierce of all people didn't have Bird in his top 5. Leaving out Bird and LeBron but including Kobe feels like politicking to a certain degree; whether he's just trying to justify a Finals loss or generate appreciation from Lakers fans after Kobe's death. After all, Paul grew up a Lakers fan and still lives in California.
