Across the Pacific (1942) American spy film set on the eve of the entry of the United States into World War II. Directed first by John Huston, then by Vincent Sherman after Huston joined the forces. "Across the Pacific" may be the title but the narrative never actually gets there. It starts in New York City (Governors Island), moves to Canada, back to New York, and continues south along the US coast (North Atlantic Ocean) to the Caribbean Sea, where it ends at or near Balboa, Panama, still some 40 miles short of the Pacific. … True enough, although a lot of talk among the characters concerns what's going on across the Pacific, in spite of their not being on it. Of the two Bogart/Astor/Greenstreet/Huston projects, this is the one I tend to watch more often, just for the sheer fun factor. Full of intrigue, witty banter, jeopardy, action and energy, it's a colorful romp from start to finish. Astor is irresistible, and it's among my three favorites of her performances. On second thought, make that four. No, actually five. Or maybe six. Well, ten or twelve...at least.
