The 1944 cliffhanger serial “Zorro’s Black Whip” from Republic Pictures is 100% Zorro free. In the lawless Old West of Idaho (Idaho?), a crusading young newspaper man dons a black mask and fights crime as The Black Whip. Early in Chapter 1, he is mortally wounded so his sister Linda “Queen Of The Serials” Sterling takes his place behind the mask. Unusual at this time to have such an active woman action hero.
