The Western Roman Empire did not fall for another three hundred or so years after the time in which this film was set, and the Eastern Roman Empire for another twelve hundred or so years.
Mann was inspired by Edward Gibbon's six-volume series The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire which was adapted by blacklisted screenwriters Ben Barzman & Philip Yordan, the prologue was written by historian Will Durant.
