For what's supposed to be a goofy comedy with a goofy Marine, they did an exceptional job with the characters. They did a better job than a lot of military movies paying attention to details with the uniforms, and even how the actors wear them, take their covers off, their shoes, salad, creases, everything. It's really rather impressive.
