Well I honestly don't see how they could have believed that the child would have had a decent quality of life, had they been permitted to seek out the experimental treatment. Perhaps they could have been deluding themselves, but fortunately the judge realised that the child was going to be the loser in the event that the parents were allowed to take the child out of the country for this treatment.
