For George Lucas and Tony Scott's careers, it was a leap forward as they became sought-after directors ever since. Heck, even The Duellists was a really good film, but Alien became an iconic masterpiece. Now, I actually like The Great Mouse Detective. It's not a bad film at all, but it's really underrated. On the other hand, The Little Mermaid is a near-masterpiece if you ask me. When you put it like that, I very much agree, and yeah, The Great Mouse Detective seems like one of several 80s Disney films that sadly kind of fell into the shadow to that of the Little Mermaid, which I guess was really the beginning of Disney's new golden age. However, I think the quality and creativity of the some of their earlier 80s work was not that far off, to what would came after.
