OP I think your criticisms are pretty harsh. If you don't like George Romero and his invention of zombies, don't watch them. Or as I do, don't talk about a bad movie when I know one. I watched the movie "Children of the Living Dead." I'm sure only a handful of people here have seen that movie. You want to talk about God awful, that's it, lol. Sad, because I love Tom Savini. It was just so bad and I think the actors did it for a paycheck only. You were on par with the ratings of Romero's last ditch effort zombie movies. Not bad, just the way it goes when you get older, actor or director. Is actor Nicolas Cage making award winning films? It's the same for other great horror directors as well. Do you think John Carpenter went out with a bang with his movies? I like to appreciate what we get and not judge my own expectations.
I'll give my quick ratings of my favorite "Dead" movies (not all Romero's):
1968 "Night of the Living Dead" - A classic, I don't have enough text to say why. 8.5/10
1972 "Children Shouldn't Play With Dead Things" - The ending gets a bit muddled, but I still like it a lot till this day 7/10
1978 "Dawn of the Dead" - Another classic. It had bad make-up effects, but is its plot awesome! 9.5/10
1985 "Day of the Dead" - As low budget as it was, sorry for Romero, it was amazingly creepy and suspenseful. 8.5/10
1985 "The Return of the Living Dead" - Great spin-off comedic approach, that worked with 80's pop culture. 7/10
1988 "Return of the Living Dead II" - Run-on guts, more comedic, but meh, it's still more horror than stuff released today. 5/10
1990 "Night of the Living Dead" - Respectable remake, not the best, but a nice fun '90s take on the classic zombie story. 6.5/10
1993 "Return of the Living Dead III" - Actress Melinda Clarke's dedication, says it all. 7.5/10
2004 "Dawn of the Dead" - People thought I was crazy buying tickets to this and not "Passion of the Christ." Very fun remake. 7.5/10
2004 "Shaun of the Dead" - I'll include this because George Romero loved it, marking it one of his favorite zombie films. 7.5/10
2005 "Land of the Dead" - Low but solid budget, and still able to show Romero's late vision. Respectable effort. 7/10
2007 "Diary of the Dead" - Interesting, but something I can't watch over and over again like the rest. 6/10
I saw somewhere on YouTube, a hardcore zombie fan. Who sought out to buy every movie ever made with the word "dead" in it. Lol, that's my kind of people.
If there's a title I didn't include, it's most likely because it sucked, lol. There hasn't been a good zombie movie made in the same realm and feel of Romero's kind of zombies. A bunch of fast-running or no-plotted zombie movies if you ask me. I do like stuff like "Fido" and "Overlord." It's entertaining to say the least, same with the "Resident Evil" movies. "28 Days Later" is a beautiful film, but I know, not zombies. But I like reading the stories about people like writer Stephen King, buying a film reel of 28 Days Later, watching and rewinding this movie over and over again in his private theater.
Nothing is better to me still than a zombie movie, when done right! Favorite gifs included.
