Should we extend this way of approaching to ourselves and get offended if someone says something about us that seems stereotypical in its essence? Is eradicating all humor that is actually funny from our lives? Like the wonderful (and delightfully non-political) periodical, Reader's Digest, states, humor is the best medicine. Actually, RD is about the only current thing I can enjoy reading. And like Switzerland, they don't choose sides.
Should Cubans be offended by Ricky Ricardo and his hot Latin temper?
Should feminists be offended by Lucy Ricardo because her husband sometimes spanked her after she got up to mischief?
Should black people be offended by Fred Sanford, his spectacularly funny appearance in traffic court? (I'm not going to go into detail on this one.)
Should blacks, gays, Puerto Ricans and Italians be offended by Archie Bunker?
Should Mexicans be offended by Cheech and Chong?
Should alcoholics be offended anytime s tv show character gets drunk? Because isn't alcoholism a disease?
Should dumb people be offended by Ted Baxter? Because don't dumb people deserve to live without being offended?
Are 3rd wave feminists offended by Charlie's Angels, Kelly, Kris and Julie in particular because they were okay with wearing bikinis and showing more skin?
Should the original "Columbo" series be banned because there were no black characters?
Maybe the above examples are ridiculous and maybe they're not, but there is some truth here. If it's okay to make fun of Trump and I'm not saying that it's not okay (Jimmy Kimmel did it the other night), then it should be equally okay to make fun of Michelle Obama and Bill Clinton.
I realize that it's not the majority of people who get so bent out of shape by "I Love Lucy" or "Sanford and Son", but I'm addressing the people who can't appreciate that humor, real, LOL humor comes from tension and hostility as well as perception. And everybody has their own back story. And humor is such a better way to deal with tension than violence? I've read posts about how Brian DePalma is a misogynist. And I've read posts saying that DePalma needs to seek therapy for his issues and not use film as a medium for expression and release? What is this nonsense? John Waters has said that if he didn't make movies, he would have become a serial killer. In psychology, two of the healthy and mature defense mechanisms are sublimation and humor. Bingo.
I say if something makes you really laugh on a tv show or a movie, then don't stifle that laugh! Don't ever do that!
