I don't know when the last time you saw the 2018 movie was, but they're kinda already there. Consider the scene of Michael literally going house to house killing nameless ladies. Some characters had a smidge of development (kid likes ballet! Cop #2 likes brownies for dinner!) but Michael spent hours stalking Laurie and her gang before making a move in the original. 2018 Michael was Jason Voorhees in a Shatner mask, and that film had one of the highest bodycounts already. This new one sounds like more of the same. I'm with you. I still like a lot about it, and I still think it's at least one of the best sequels in the franchise, but I really thought it was gonna be stylistically a little more in line with the original. Instead it was a little more like Halloween 2, which isn't nearly as good. The tracking shot rampage is cool, but some of the stuff they cut out was more Carpenter-esque. There were some long shots of Michael just down the street looking at people during the day and stuff, that really could have gone a long way to building some suspense and and setting what I think would have been a better tone before we got to the mayhem. The 'smidge' of character development too was .. fine... but as you noted they tried to cram in some personality into these characters that were only on screen for a few mins and the dialog became awkward rather than natural. So at least this time I'll have an idea that this one is gonna ramp up and be a little wild. I won't expect the patience and suspense, and as long as it's a good version of a crazy slasher I'll be ok. And the Carpenter score should be awesome again.
