Most won't remember more than a couple of the characters names.
Hux: TFA's version of a younger Tarkin. He was lackluster and timid by comparison (except for his "little Hitler" speech). He lacked Tarkin's presence as the evil gentleman who hides a ruthless and monstrous character beneath... a badly written ripoff of the ANH character, Hux sucks!
Unkar Plutt: He seemed like a mixture of Jabba the Hutt and Watto. Yeah, just like those 2 characters we got the sense that he is stingy and greedy, and he keeps slaves. What else did he add to the story? Bad CGI and he keeps the Millennium Falcon in "his garage" because?... And he doesn't even know what he's doing when he tinkered on it.
Snoke: Let's go back to the bad visual effects of the Emperor's hologram in TESB by making a bad CGI ripoff of him. Let's give him worse lines but have him shout and scream.
Finn: A Stormtrooper who has been programmed all his life for loyalty to the First Order; shakes it off permanently in his first battle; and that turns him into part Kunta Kinte, part MarySue worshipper, part Jar Jar Binks!?!... Seriously!!
Kylo: This character's pedigree as a Force user is all over the place! One minute he can do things Darth Vader couldn't! The next minute he's a complete disaster and failure whenever some untrained, inexperienced Force user decides to challenge him.
Rey: You can deny it and create all the excuses you want... Force using MarySue! Bottom line! No genuine character development ever took place here.... She wants to go home and she's scared. But everyone either loves her, implicitly trusts her, respects her, follows her, or even worships her for no apparent reason other than she's Rey. So when she's not being the scared little scavenger who just wants to go home, she instantly turns into a MarySue that everyone listens to unquestionably or follows in blind inspiration. And of course whenever she decides to use the Force (that in itself seems to be a matter of haphazard choice) she is effortlessly victorious every time.
Chewbacca: Let's make him an even more disrespected, throwaway sidekick than he was in the OT.
Han Solo and Leia: We had a son who grew up to be a Darth Vader wannabe! But we ourselves are just the same people we were in ANH.
Luke Skywalker: Strip him of any dialogue, get him out of Rey's spotlight and shove him into the last 5 minutes of the movie.
Yes, TFA was amazingly incompetent bottom of the barrel writing. R1 had solid characters, they were just not the cartoony fanfic carricatures that we saw in TFA: It's a gritty war film with characters dying at the end, no place for MarySue writing here!
- The Whill-priests are one of the best odd couples in recent memory, I want to see a spin off telling their story.
- The other odd couple was the droid and the pilot, both former Empire sevants, but with different backgrounds...thr droid was way more interesting than C-3PO ever was (sorry I still luv you golden-gay boy)
- Jyn was the classic SW orphan character, but her story of 2 fathers who abandoned her, and her reconciling with them, and thinking their life work to end (i.e., getting the sabotaged plans as revenge, fighting guerrillia style like Saw for the rebellion) was a lot better than the non-story, but myster box-ing laziness that was the Rey character. Cassian was a traumatized soldier done right (unlike Finn).
- The baddies were actual villains, and not YA EmoRens beaten by rookies all the time.
