I haven't read it either, but someone I know read it and told me what happens in it. It said that the novel was written for the main purpose of becoming a movie. I don't see The Silence of the Lambs movie as a tragic romance either. The Hannibal novel apparently goes in that direction as well, with Hannibal Lecter kidnapping Clarice and keeping her constantly drugged so that they can live "happily" ever after. GTFO. Yeah, Hannibal and Rising were both written for the sake of just making a movie and continuing to profit off from the Hannibal character because Hopkins was so well received. I really like Hannibal, but the stuff between Hannibal and Clarice in that film really undermines Silence. He specifically said he had no intentions of pursuing Clarice in Silence (probably speaking both literally eating or romantically pursuing her) and he clearly just respects her enough as a worthy adversary who is more interesting alive. I don't watch Hannibal as being completely connected to The Silence of the Lambs. I watch it as an alternate version of the universe that The Silence of the Lambs created. Nothing in the movie fits with The Silence of the Lambs, not just what you mentioned. If Jodie Foster had returned as the character then it would have been impossible to separate them. The style and story are nothing like Manhunter/Red Dragon or The Silence of the Lambs. Though he doesn't "pursue" her in Hannibal imo. He is more of a ironic guardian angel in the movie. At least that's how he sees himself, while getting his own pleasure out of his actions as well. Mason Verger is the only reason Hannibal Lecter even comes in contact with her again. He is the accidental matchmaker so to speak.
