Only seen once, when it was first released, but it's still one of the most memorable films of my childhood. Never saw the remake, actually directed by Wells' great-grandson, but I'm sure it can't compare to the the original, for me anyway. The original made a big impression on my young mind, for so many of the reasons you articulate. I love the memory of experiencing that film. A gift in time (no pun intended) that I will treasure forever.
