I love this movie.
Scorsese clearly thought he was creating something brutal, violent on a non-physical level - to judge from interviews and comments. But what he made instead was something warm and velvety and inviting, despite the sad themes. It's his first, but not last such film and I think it ushers in the better half of his career.
