I agree, sort of. I do feel that Leigh makes good use of Blethyn’s limits, but in a year this good for actressing I feel she was over-rewarded. Jean-Baptiste is much better, yeah, although I found it hard to swallow that she was Blethyn’s daughter. She’s pretty much a co-lead, true - the film is about both women. I do love S&L, though, and accept Blethyn’s rather touching ham as part of the fabric of the film. Blethyn’s follow-up nomination for Little Voice is one of the worst performances I have ever seen nominated for any major award, and I include the Razzies in that. They don't look a damn thing alike, no. Though I can't really fault the actors. Does Blethyn whine her way through that one, too? Nope, in that one she screeches. Her S&L performance is a model of subtlety by comparison - imagine it turned up to 11.
