Always gotta go with the original, I grew up on it and watched it until the tape died. I loved it, and it was a very creepy movie, creepy atmosphere, creepy music, creepy looking house...but I don't actually remember it scaring me as a kid. The Bat, also in 1959 with Vincent Price, that one gave me nightmares for many years.
I've had a love/hate relationship with the remake, when we heard a remake was coming out, I was stoked, I was 10 when we rented it, that opening scene in the operating room, that f**ked me up and I couldn't watch it again until I was in my 20s. And NOW you watch it, and it really pales with the stuff you see on CSI and the Chicago shows, doesn't it?
Watching it again now all these years later, I've come to love it. A lot of stuff if you actually think about it, doesn't make sense, but it's a pretty decent update on the story.
