I haven't seen the film but Ray Bradbury did an interview where he said the director asked if they could get rid of the butterfly thing completely. Bradbury said: "can you believe the idiot would suggest that?"
After Harlin was fired Bradbury's agent sent him a giant inflatable butterfly.
