As you already know, the X-Men original trilogy was conceived and produced in a transitional era. They launched the idea of "vaguely grounded" superhero movies, which in turn inspired Nolan and his Batman. The MCU did the opposite. Nothing wrong with either the ways, since they both were extremely successful.
The MCU debuted 10 years later, when public perception was finally ready for a more faithful adaptation. Talking about progression.
The X-Men Beginnings Trilogy and DP are much more "comic book-ish".
