I don't get this talking point. She's American. She's black (partially). Jamaica's blacks come from Africa. They were British brought slaves from the continent just like the United States' slaves were. So why are people saying she's not African-American? I mean if you go by origin or origin of origin, then we're all African American. She's not. She's a black lady or a Jamacian/Indian American but she's definitely not African American. Charilize Theron is more African American than she is. So the deciding factor is that there can't be a stop in between Africa and the United States? Jamaica is part of North America, but we're just talking about African-United Statesian? Other than being lighter, my guess is her experience didn't differ from other blacks in the United States. I don't think most racists say "she's alright - - there was a stop between Africa and the US in her family tree".
