The Prisoner Of Shark Island is far more pro-South than Gone With the Wind. That film has a scene I am amazed they would do where the Southern slaveowner turned prison doctor has to use a threatening slavemaster posture to get the terrified black guards to fire on the supply ship.
GWTW is really not pro-South and it avoids showing anything that would be too detailed--like when Scarlett is attacked--she is attacked by a white and black, and it is the white who attempts to rape her and it is her black former farmhand who comes to her rescue. They depict Mamie as the moral pillar for the characters-and she refers to "poor white trash" more than once.
They also avoid mentioning Ku Klux Klan even though it seemed that was what Leslie Howard was involved in.
Shark Island has a character say to his grandchild that the war was not about slavery but state's rights and independence! I don't remember any of that in GWTW. The male characters in GWTW are mostly kind of ineffective--even Clark Gable doesn't give a damn.
