I heard this was one of the only real good ones in the franchise besides the original and New Nightmare (which I really liked). The WOM was correct as this was pretty good. It has a nice sense of dread and atmosphere. Some really good cinematography and lighting. The practical effects were also terrific. The characters were all pretty likable especially Kristen played by a young Patricia Arquette. Interestingly, Laurence Fishburne is also in this movie, but only in a bit part. Nice to have him though. Heather Langenkamp is also pretty good in this movie. I thought she was weak in teh original but improved here and was also good in New Nightmare. I actually felt sad when Nancy died. Surprised Nancy is never really seen in the lists of great screen heroines. Of course there are some really bad CG and stop motion effects but you have to remind yourself this was a low budget movie even for its time. It's too bad apparently there are only three actual good movies in the series but luckily they are really well done. Maybe I'll check out the other sequels sometime despite them apparently being average to bad. Looking at the names behind it looks like Wes Craven helped co write the script along with Frank Darabont! Who of course would go on t make The Shawshank Redemption and The Green Mile. Chuck Russell is the director and the following year he helmed the excellent remake of The Blob (also collaborating with Darabont on that one) and later helmed blockbusters like The Mask, Eraser, and The Scorpion King.
