Vastly superior effects.
Better acting. The original was like a stage play. The characters seemed like archetypes, not real people. In the remake, the acting is much more naturalistic; you could imagine it actually happening in real life the way they showed it.
In the remake, a major difference was that there wasn't an ex-Nazi for all of the rest (British and American) to hate.
The remake put a lot more into the clash with the nomads, leading up to a more exciting final chase scene. In the original, pretty much everything that happens with the nomads occurs off-screen.
