Again, a studio that doesn’t understand what made “Space Jam” such a hit.
Michael Jordan was on fire at that time, it was the 1990s. He was the Babe Ruth of Basketball. He was globally renowned. The 3-peat and then the USA Dream Team. Air Jordan etc... even people who didn’t watch basketball knew Jordan.
In the 1990s, the Looney Tunes were huge. Tazmanian Devil was on tshirts, they just hit a pop culture revival after “Who Framed Roger Rabbit” etc... it was a perfect pop culture explosion with Bill “Ghostbusting” Murray and even Larry Bird.
LeBron isn’t MJ, heck, he’s not even Kobe. Other than the revival series on HBO Max, the Looney Tunes aren’t popular among kids. Most 10 year olds don’t know the Looney Tunes or care.
Jordan’s games averaged 20-40 million viewers in the playoffs. NBA games today with LeBron are LUCKY to get 2-4 million viewers ... maybe 5 million- 10 if it’s the NBA finals and it’s a close match up.
Plus, it’s 90s nostalgia that make people still like Space Jam today. Jordan’s shoes outsell ALL NBA players shoes combined in 2020. And he’s been retired for 20 years.
