Great movie; besides the musical numbers, the dialogue among the characters is sharp, funny and often risque. The gritty world of putting together a Broadway musical with its sweaty hard work, "sugar daddies," etc., complements the sometimes coy musical sequences. MGM musicals were never like these Warner Bros. films.
My only issue with this movie is the choice of Ruby Keeler's character for the last-minute understudy. Ginger Rogers' character would never have turned down that part--it wasn't the time to be nice; everyone knew she would be better, and it would have been easier on everyone in the show. But that's show biz.
