Martin Scorsese was working in Netherlands several years earlier with Surinamese director Pim De Parra on 'Obsessions' (1969). Scorsese was high on Woodstock and keen to ride the "sex wave" he'd heard about, having abandoned his plans to become a priest. Paul Verhoeven's controversial melodrama 'Turkish Delight' inspired De Parra's influential political horror 'My Nights With Susan, Sandra, Olga & Julie' (1975).
