It's one of the 1001 movies one must see before... So I can see that there is some importance, I just don't see it myself.
The big production number at the end is such a strange twist, "My forgotten Man" that is both good and powerful but a strange way to end a movie that most of the time was rather light. But, maybe those were the times that needed a reminder...
When AFI celebrated 100 years "you're going out a youngster but you've got to come back a star!" was voted as one of the 100 best lines.
