Is it based on his football ability or the background of his childhood in a Liberian refugee camp, then emigrating to Canada at six years of age, that's the drive behind the accolades??
He was poor last night, but it was the biggest game he'll probably have in his career and nerves with his young age and inexperience sure played a part in that. His stats in the Bundesliga of three goals and eight assists this season, don't exactly scream out best in the world, not even best in the Bundesliga. I'm not being harsh, because he has shown promise this season, most notably against Chelsea in the 1st leg of the last 16 of the Champions League, which was his best of the season, not the over blown mass hysteria of his assist against an already defeated, inept and dejected Barcelona.
I understand it must be a big thing to be the first/second Canadian football player to win the Champions League (Owen Hargreaves will always be viewed as Canadian by myself, irrespective of him choosing to represent England) but he is one small part of great team in Bayern, and for football interest to grow in Canada, your gonna need more than Alphonso Davies. I'm sure though that centre forward Jonathan Davies exploits in France after his move from Belgian Club Genk to Ligue 1 side LOSC Lille for a record £30 million for a Canadian footballer, will also gain as much sports media interest.....probably not a single Canadian aware of that due to his normal childhood.
The sports media loves a feel good story to inspire the younger generation, add the desire to see the game finally make mass appeal in North American continent, and we have yet another over-hyped North American footballer.
