That's a really underrated and overlooked movie. Great acting and good story. I've watched it many times. I am glad I am not alone on that one. I actually think the film ended up picking up several heavy nominations/awards back in 1988/89, even having Geena Davis winning an Academy Award for her part as Muriel Pritchett, while critics such as Roger Ebert among other hailed it as one of the finest releases of the late 80s, and somehow it become one of those great "forgotten" gems, which people rarely talk about/mentions anymore. I might have confused it with another film, but some years ago, I think it had somewhere around 6,1 or 6,2 at IMDb, but reading several of the reviews, it seemed like a lot of people went in thinking or expecting it was gonna be another comedy riot, with a typical love story and instead they ended up with something, well, else and not everybody enjoyed that. I guess that it was maybe one of those films which seemed to hit off well with the critics at the time, but maybe not so much with the audience.
