Racial quotas are bad for art. You do not get good art by eliminating merit--you get stale, artificial, oppressive mediocrity. But the Oscars was always about fake virtue signaling--the bigger problem is that it reveals how the corporate media thinks. They are admitting they will discriminate against Europeans and it was Europeans who invented both the dramatic structure used in film and the medium itself. Talk about audacity. It's like telling Italians they know nothing about pizza. This is why regional art and more national-focused art is better to encourage. Everyone gets represented--instead of trying to make one-size-fits-all art based on something other than merit and shutting out talent and audience preferences. Except it's not "racial quotas", though it's not surprising that I'm-not-racists are obsessed with the race part of the criteria. Is a publicist for the movie a woman? (And a majority of publicists are, in fact, female)? Does the distribution company have at least two interns from any minority or underrepresented group? Congratulations, you qualify.
