I guess big name stars were and are sent scripts all the time, via their agents in most cases.
I heard about something that Steve McQueen charged and sent a bill for one million Dollars just to read a screenplay at some points of his career, and that Dino de Laurentis actually payed him that amount for an eventual lead in a forthcoming version of Tai-Pan (that eventually came in 1986 starring Aussie Bryan Brown instead and became a mega flop)
