It will have effects more like the SARS virus in 2002. Before COVID I always saw a few Asians in the markets wearing masks. I thought they were paranoid and a bit silly, and they were, since SARS died out and hasn't reappeared. So sure, ten years from now you'll see a few white people wearing masks in the supermarket. But if there is a vaccine within a year as they say, COVID will not have much longterm impact beyond germaphobic paranoia. Definitely our grandchildren will not be affected at all.
This is worse than SARS. Yes, it's worse than SARS, but nothing like the Bubonic Plague. SARS petered out without a vaccine. Sure, if no vaccine is found we're in for deep trouble. But they seem confident there will be a vaccine.
I just was very suspicious of that article criticizing democracy and praising Chinese authoritarianism.  It had a political agenda which had nothing to do with healthcare. That's why I disregard its hyperbole.
I majored in journalism in college. Journalists often have agendas and that one certainly does.
