Yes, it's worse than SARS, but nothing like the Bubonic Plague. SARS petered out without a vaccine. Sure, if no vaccine is found we're in for deep trouble. But they seem confident there will be a vaccine. I just was very suspicious of that article criticizing democracy and praising Chinese authoritarianism.  It had a political agenda which had nothing to do with healthcare. That's why I disregard its hyperbole. I majored in journalism in college. Journalists often have agendas and that one certainly does.
IMO, it wasn't so much praising Chinese Authoritarianism, but rather stating what has and may transpire. I don't think it's a political article, but more of a historical perspective.
