IMO, it wasn't so much praising Chinese Authoritarianism, but rather stating what has and may transpire. I don't think it's a political article, but more of a historical perspective. The author says: Frankly, I don't see that this pandemic has made people lose faith in liberal democracy. It's a specious political argument, especially when combined with his praise of the authoritarian government in China. What other ideology does he want to give space to? Centralized control by a Chinese-style authoritarian oligarchy? It was a question, not a pronouncement, and a wonderful topic for discussion. Myself, I don't believe they will supplant the US as the next global superpower.
