I was one of those people who watched Cats after the HBO premiere. The singing and dancing were good. Not knowing anything about Cats beyond Broadway Series commercials, I can't make any comparisons. But the plot is virtually nonexistent, except for the predictable ending where the one cat gets into "heaven" or whatever they called it. I'll be generous and give it a 4/10, as I'm not gonna be on a hate train for this movie. Aside from that, the CGI was awful.
