For instance - you do Flyers/Penguins at Penn State's huge stadium

Detroit/Chicago at Michigan's huge stadium

Rangers/Islanders at Yankee Stadium

Maple Leafs vs. Canadiens at (I have no clue what outdoor venue is popular up there)

etc etc

You do this all throughout Canada/The U.S. for New Years Day

Would be a big giant party and event for the NHL and their fans

Not sure NBC would go for it... which is all the NHL really cares about. Spreading the product thin isn't a special event. NHL is not the NFL.
A double header would be fine, east & west conferences.

Besides, CBC (and NBC?) already treat their Winter Classic pre-games as several hour celebration of the game already. There is an event coverage to it as it is.
