Not sure NBC would go for it... which is all the NHL really cares about. Spreading the product thin isn't a special event. NHL is not the NFL. A double header would be fine, east & west conferences. Besides, CBC (and NBC?) already treat their Winter Classic pre-games as several hour celebration of the game already. There is an event coverage to it as it is. But The Winter Classic is kind of passe at this point.
If it's not The Flyers vs. Somebody - I'm not interested
We have the Holiday Season - people are still in Christmas mood - it's a giant Holiday - New Years Day - everybody is in a festive mood - a party day after New Years Eve
I think it would be fun for the towns and the fans of their respective teams - a giant tailgating event (of course we can't do it this year - but I think it would be a smart way for the league to have a little fun, make some money and promote itself)
Hockey Day in Canada, on CBC/Sportsnet (I keep saying CBC like it's 1988), does that in late winter every season... but no outdoor games. Triple header with 6 Canadian teams (or 4 games with all 7 maybe, 2 at the night?)... which is promoted like an all day hockey event. The way I think they do that is set up shop in Canadian towns with their media gear & basically treat those towns as 'NHL hosts' for the televised games or something. It's their way of going all-in to party the Canadian game with all the Canadian teams playing. It's probably not as huge as it sounds, I don't think casual fans even know which wkend they choose, nor do most ppl likely watch the entire slate. Points for trying though.
