How exactly do you ask someone to resign? Doesn't that mean you're firing them? Basically yes, but for aesthetic reasons people often "resign" from positions since it sounds better than being outright fired. I guess you could call it a "euphemism" of sorts (kind of how people say "downsizing" instead of mass firings)
