I actually think the whole movie is just as great as the opening scene. It gets more interesting as it goes along imo.
Martin Scorsese is great at giving a particular feel to a certain time and place and of course a lot of credit goes to Daniel Day-Lewis for his brilliant performance. I think DiCaprio is miscast, but still gives a mostly convincing performance. Same goes for Cameron Diaz.
As others have pointed out in the past, this movies has some of the greatest art direction of all time.
